After Careful Consideration
The talk
"After careful consideration, we have decided not to proceed with your application."
Nearly one million young people in the UK have received a version of that line. Many have received it hundreds of times. Some have stopped counting.
Sophie has been on both sides of that email — as a frustrated graduate, a reluctant recruiter who once walked out of the office in tears, and a returning job seeker who found nothing had changed. Now as founder of Pollen Careers, she has built an alternative.
In this talk, Sophie makes the case that the youth unemployment crisis is not a talent shortage. It is a process failure. The CV was never a reliable indicator of potential. In 2026, it is actively harmful.
It is not a guilt trip. It is an invitation — to recognise the power you hold, and use it differently.
The framework
01
Inclusive
Remove the filters that screen out potential. Design your process for the person you haven't hired yet.
02
Meritocratic
Reward willingness to prove potential — not credentials and polish.
03
Respectful
Every candidate who applies deserves to hear back. One kind word can redirect a life.
"You have the power to change someone's life with a single interaction. A piece of feedback. A kind word. A door pointed to rather than closed."
The talent is there. Go and find it.
